Cricket betting guide: formats, the toss, weather and useful sites
by The DudeUpdated
Cricket isn’t one sport for betting purposes, it’s three. A five-day Test, a 50-over one-day international and a T20 that’s over in an evening behave so differently that the first question in any cricket betting guide has to be: which format is this? Get that right and the rest makes more sense.
The main markets. Match winner comes first, with the draw as a third outcome in Tests. Then top batter and top bowler for each team, total runs in an innings or in the first six overs, method of the next dismissal, and a lot of live betting. Odds are shown as decimals or fractions depending on where you are. If that’s new, read how betting odds work.
What makes cricket different for predictions. Conditions shape a cricket match more than in almost any other sport. The pitch can favour fast bowlers on day one and spinners by day four. The toss decides who uses the best of it. Dew in day-night games makes bowling second harder. Rain shortens matches and brings in DLS, the formula that resets targets. Short formats are swingy: in T20 one over can flip a result. Franchise leagues such as the IPL and the Big Bash rebuild squads between seasons, so last year’s form travels badly. Much of this is only known on the morning of the match, which is why cricket prices move sharply at the toss.
What I list for cricket. It’s a young section, so the lists are short. Cricket betting sites is the main list, covering bookmakers and exchanges that price cricket properly, including the Betfair exchange. For research, ESPNcricinfo and Cricbuzz are on the prediction sites list, and score services that cover cricket sit under tools and software. Cricket tipsters and apps will be added as they earn a place.
Scores are explained on the methodology page, and no bookmaker pays to be here. New to all this? Start with what sports betting is. 18+.

Cricket betting: common questions
What is the most popular cricket bet?
The match winner. In T20 and one-day cricket it's a two-way bet; in Test matches the draw is a third option and often a realistic one. After that come top batter and top bowler for a team, total runs in an innings, and live betting, which is very big in cricket because the odds move with every over.
How much does the toss matter in cricket betting?
It can matter a lot, and it depends on conditions. The captain who wins the toss chooses to bat or bowl first. On a pitch that will crumble, or in a day-night game where evening dew makes the ball hard to grip, that choice is a real advantage. Match odds often move as soon as the toss is made.
What happens to cricket bets when it rains?
Limited-overs matches shortened by rain are decided by the DLS method (Duckworth-Lewis-Stern), which sets a revised target, and match bets normally stand on the official result. Markets such as total runs may be void if the overs are reduced. If no result is possible, match bets are usually refunded. Rules differ by bookmaker, so check them.
Can a Test match bet end in a draw?
Yes. A Test lasts up to five days, and if neither side has won when time runs out, it's a draw. Bad weather and flat pitches make that more likely. If you back a team in the three-way match market and it's drawn, you lose, so look at the forecast before you bet on a Test.
Is T20 cricket harder to predict than Tests?
Generally, yes. A T20 innings is only 120 balls, so one big over or one early wicket changes the game, and weaker teams win more often. Over five days of a Test, quality has time to tell. Franchise leagues such as the IPL add a further twist, because squads are rebuilt through auctions.
Where can I research a cricket bet?
Start with ground and head-to-head records. ESPNcricinfo's Statsguru has the deepest archive of player and venue numbers, and Cricbuzz is quick for live scores and team news. Neither gives betting tips; they give you the facts to form a view. Then compare prices across licensed bookmakers before you place anything.
