Betting guides: odds, bet types and tipsters explained in plain English
New to betting, or just tired of nodding along?
These betting guides explain how betting works in plain English, with every term spelled out the first time it appears. No hype and no “systems”. Just what a bet is, what it pays, and what the bookmaker isn’t telling you.
Start with the basics. What sports betting is explains who you’re betting against and how a bookmaker makes money whoever wins. How betting odds work covers decimal, fractional and American prices and what they say about chance. Then the common bets: what a parlay is, over/under explained, BTTS (both teams to score) explained and Asian handicap explained.
When you’re comfortable with those, read value betting and bankroll management. They’re the two ideas that separate careful bettors from hopeful ones: only bet when the price is better than the real chance, and never stake so much that a bad run ends the fun.
Thinking of following someone else’s picks? Read how to judge a tipster and how to spot a scam tipster before you pay anyone. If it’s an app you’re weighing up, how prediction apps work shows what a model can and can’t know, and why hit rate is misleading explains the number every tipster quotes first.
More guides are being written. For single terms, use the betting glossary. 18+ only.

Betting guides: common questions
Where should a complete beginner start?
Start with what sports betting is, then how betting odds work. Once you can read a price and turn it into a rough percentage chance, every other guide makes sense. After that, read the bankroll management guide before you deposit anywhere. It's the least exciting guide here and the one that saves people the most money.
Will these guides teach me how to win?
They'll teach you how bets work, what they pay and where the bookmaker's margin hides. That helps you avoid bad bets, which is the realistic goal. Nothing here is a system for beating the bookies, and I'd be suspicious of any guide that claims to be one. Most bettors lose over time.
Do I need to be good at maths to follow them?
No. If you can multiply two numbers on your phone, you're fine. Each guide works through examples with real-looking prices, and the odds converter and parlay calculator on this site do the arithmetic for you. The ideas matter more than the sums.
Who writes the guides?
The Dude, the editorial voice of this site. Guides are drafted with AI help from a brief, then edited and fact-checked before they're signed off. Every guide shows the date it was last reviewed, and mistakes get corrected when readers point them out.
How often are the guides updated?
The plan is to re-read each guide at least every six months, and sooner when something changes, such as a new type of bet becoming common or a law changing in a big market. The site is new, so no guide has been through that cycle yet. The date at the top of a guide is the date of the last real edit.
