NBA betting guide: spreads, totals, props and the tools I'd use
by The DudeUpdated
The NBA is a points sport, and that changes everything about how you bet it. With around a hundred possessions a game for each team, the better side wins far more often than in football, so bookmakers don’t ask you who wins. They ask by how much. This NBA betting guide covers the markets, what moves them and what I list to help.
The main markets. The point spread gives the underdog a head start. The total is an over/under on combined points (over/under explained). The moneyline is a straight pick of the winner. Then there are player props and same-game parlays, which are fun and carry a bigger bookmaker margin than they appear to. Lines are usually shown in American odds; the odds converter turns them into decimal and into a percentage chance.
What makes the NBA different for predictions. Two things. First, pace: a fast team against a slow one changes the total more than either team’s talent does, which is why the better stats sites adjust for possessions. Second, availability. Schedules include back-to-backs (games on consecutive nights), stars sit out for rest, and an injury report can swing a spread by several points an hour before tip-off. A prediction made in the morning can be stale by evening.
What I list for the NBA. NBA prediction apps such as Action Network. NBA prediction sites, where research tools like Basketball Reference and Cleaning the Glass sit beside picks sites such as Covers. And NBA betting sites, mostly US state-licensed sportsbooks. There are betting podcasts for the league as well, on the podcasts list.
Everything is scored with the rubric on the methodology page, and nobody pays for a place. If the basics are new to you, start with how betting odds work. 18+ (21+ in most US states).

NBA betting: common questions
What is the most popular NBA bet?
The point spread. The favourite has to win by more than a set number of points and the underdog can lose by fewer, or win. Totals (over/under on combined points) and the moneyline (who wins, no margin) come next. Player props, such as points or rebounds for one player, have grown fast and now fill most same-game parlays.
What does -5.5 mean in NBA betting?
It's a point spread. A team at -5.5 must win by six or more for your bet to win. The other side is +5.5: it can lose by up to five, or win outright. The half point is there so the bet can't tie. Spreads exist because NBA games often have a clear favourite.
Why do NBA betting lines move so much on game day?
Injury and rest news. NBA rosters are small and one star changes everything, so when a team lists a key player as out, or rests him on the second night of a back-to-back, the spread and total shift within minutes. If you bet early, you take the chance that the news goes against you.
Does overtime count in NBA bets?
For most full-game markets, yes. Spreads, totals and moneylines normally include overtime, and so do player props. Quarter and half bets only cover that period. Rules vary a little between bookmakers, so check the market rules before betting a total on a game you expect to be close.
Are NBA prediction models any good?
They're useful for the long season: 82 games per team gives a model a lot of data on pace and efficiency. They're weakest exactly where the money is made or lost, on late line-up news the model hasn't seen. Treat a model's number as a starting point and check the injury report before you act on it.
Can I bet on the NBA from outside the US?
Usually, yes, if sports betting is legal where you live. Most international bookmakers price every NBA game. The US-facing sportsbooks I list only take customers who are physically in a state where they hold a licence. Always use a bookmaker licensed for your country. 18+, or 21+ in most US states.
