NFL betting guide: American football spreads, key numbers and tools

by The DudeUpdated

American football is a spread sport. Most NFL bets aren’t about who wins, they’re about the margin, and that’s why this NFL betting guide starts with two numbers: 3 and 7. A field goal is worth three points and a touchdown with its extra point is worth seven, so games end on those margins far more often than any other. Half a point either side of them matters more here than in any other sport.

The main markets. The point spread, the total (combined points, see over/under explained) and the moneyline, which is a straight pick of the winner. Then come player props and parlays. A parlay chains several picks into one bet that only pays if all of them win; the parlay calculator shows what that does to your chances.

What makes the NFL different for predictions. The sample is tiny. Each team plays 17 regular-season games, so one bad bounce shapes a whole season’s numbers, and models lean on play-by-play measures such as EPA (expected points added) rather than results. The quarterback is worth more than any single player in other team sports, so injury news moves lines hard. Bye weeks, short weeks before Thursday games, travel and wind all get priced in. And because there’s a full week between games, the market has a long time to get sharp by kick-off.

What I list for American football. NFL prediction sites such as Pro Football Reference, PFF and Sharp Football Analysis. NFL prediction apps led by Action Network. NFL betting sites, mostly US sportsbooks that are licensed state by state. And NFL betting podcasts, where Circles Off teaches more than it tips.

Scores use the rubric on the methodology page. Nobody pays to appear. 21+ in most US states; bet what you can afford to lose.

NFL betting: common questions

  • What are key numbers in NFL betting?

They're the most common winning margins. Because scoring comes in threes (field goals) and sevens (touchdowns with the extra point), far more games end with a margin of 3 or 7 than any other number. A spread of -2.5 and one of -3.5 look close, but they sit on opposite sides of the most important number in the sport.

  • What is the most popular NFL bet?

The point spread, by a distance. The favourite gives points, the underdog gets them, and both sides are priced close to even. Totals (over/under on combined points) and moneylines follow. Parlays and same-game parlays are very popular with casual bettors, and they're also where sportsbooks make the most from each dollar staked.

  • What does -110 mean on an NFL bet?

It's American odds. At -110 you stake 110 to win 100. That's the standard price on both sides of a spread, and the gap between -110 and even money is the sportsbook's cut. In decimal odds it's 1.91. You need to win a little over 52% of such bets just to break even.

  • Does weather matter for NFL totals?

It can. Strong wind is the factor bettors watch most, because it hurts passing and kicking, and totals for outdoor games often drop when a windy forecast firms up. Rain and cold matter less than people think. Games in domes and closed-roof stadiums take the weather out of the question entirely.

  • Are NFL picks from apps and podcasts worth following?

Treat them as opinions to test, not answers. The NFL season is short, so even a poor picker can look brilliant for a couple of months. The sources I rate explain their reasoning and talk about the number, not just the team. Ask for a long, public record before you pay for anything.

  • Is this page about college football too?

Mostly the NFL, which is what most readers mean by American football betting. Several listed products cover college football as well, including the US picks sites. College games have bigger spreads and thinner information on smaller schools, so the same tools apply but the prices are softer and swing more.
