What is an accumulator bet?
An accumulator, or acca, is a single bet that combines several selections, multiplies their odds together and pays out only if every one of those selections wins.
Think of an acca as a chain. Each pick is a link, and the winnings from one roll straight onto the next. Big payout if the chain holds. Nothing at all if one link snaps.
“Accumulator” is the UK and Irish word. In the US the same bet is a parlay. Two picks make a double, three a treble, and from four upwards you’ll see “four-fold”, “five-fold” and so on.
Example
You pick three football teams to win on Saturday:
| Leg | Decimal odds |
|---|---|
| Team A to win | 1.80 |
| Team B to win | 2.00 |
| Team C to win | 1.50 |
Combined odds: 1.80 × 2.00 × 1.50 = 5.40. A £10 stake returns £54, which is £44 profit. If A and B win but C draws, you get £0. Close doesn’t count.
Watch out
The bookie’s margin is baked into every leg, and multiplying legs multiplies that margin too. That’s why bookies love promoting accas: the more legs you add, the worse the deal usually gets for you. At 5.40 the market says this bet lands less than one time in five, so treat it that way.
I keep accas small, both in legs and in stake. If you want the full picture, read my guide on how parlays and accumulators work, or run your own numbers through the parlay calculator.
