What is a bet builder?
A bet builder is a bookmaker feature that lets you combine several selections from the same match, such as the winner, total goals and a goalscorer, into one bet at a single combined price.
A normal accumulator joins picks from different matches. For years bookies refused to combine picks from the same match, because the outcomes are linked. If a team wins 3-0, “over 2.5 goals” and “their striker scores” both become much more likely.
Bet builders solved that with software that prices the links. “Bet builder” is the UK and European name. In the US the same product is a same game parlay, or SGP. Some bookies use their own brand names for it.
Example
One football match, three picks:
| Selection | Odds as a single |
|---|---|
| Home team to win | 1.80 |
| Over 2.5 goals | 2.00 |
| Home striker to score anytime | 2.20 |
Multiply them like an ordinary acca and you get 1.80 × 2.00 × 2.20 = 7.92. But the bet builder won’t offer that. Because these three things tend to happen together, it might quote something like 5.50. A $10 stake would return $55 if all three land.
So don’t expect the “multiply everything” price. The discount is the bookie accounting for the correlation, plus a healthy margin on top.
Watch out
- All legs must win. One miss and the bet loses.
- You can’t easily check whether 5.50 is fair, because the correlation maths is hidden. That lack of transparency works in the bookie’s favour.
- Player legs have their own rules. If your striker doesn’t start, some bookies void the leg and others void the whole bet. Check before you build.
I treat bet builders as entertainment for a game I’m watching. Small stakes, few legs.
